Thomas Gordon Canoe Company

Thomas Gordon

Gordon Boatworks evolved from my great grandfather's company the "Thomas Gordon Canoe Company", operating at the foot of the Kawatha lakes in the small town of Lakefield, Ontario, Canada. Thomas Gordon (1833 - 1916) sold his first hand crafted canoe in 1858 at the age of 25 and was in full production by 1861. A pioneer of canoe building and manufacturing, he is credited as the first builder to construct his canoes on solid building forms, and for developing patterns to duplicate the multiple shapes of the canoe planks and structural members. These techniques ensured standardization, quality control, and for the first time allowed for the mass production of these finely crafted boats. Thomas Gordon exported his canoes to England and won numerous medals by entering his boats in international competitions in Europe, Canada and the United States.

Gilbert Gordon

In 1909 Gilbert Gordon, my great uncle, (the youngest boy from Thomas' 10 children - 3 boys, 7 girls) formed the "Gordon Canoe Company" in the nearby town of Bobcaygeon, Ontario on Pigeon lake. Gilbert was known as an exceptional craftsman and was at the helm of the company for the next 17 years.

Charles Gordon

In 1926, Gilbert's older brother Charles Gordon, my grandfather, began operating the business under the name "Gordon Boatworks Co." The Boatworks prospered, and he went on to design and build wonderful mahogany runboats, barrel-back speed boats, and custom cruisers that were a reflection of Gordon Boatworks' craftsmanship and artistry.

Uncle Ted

Ted Gordon, my uncle, (the oldest of Charlie's three sons) carried on the family tradition operating "Gordon Boatworks" and later created Midway Marina, a successful boat harbour dedicated to sales, rentals, repairs, servicing and storage of fine boats until his retirement.

Rowers World

John Gordon

As the fourth generation Gordon continuing in the boat business, I am proud to be able to use my grandfather's original "Gordon Boatworks" logo as part of our Rowers World crest to represent our company. This logo, to me, represents family tradition, dedication to quality and commitment to customers.

Our current selection of quality boats features recreational rowing sculls. These self propelled craft are reminiscent of a slower, quieter time. Like the original canoes of my ancestry these boats allow you to be on the open water and enjoy nature at its best.

As a former competitive rower, I have hand picked these various models of rowing shells and equipment, and can attest to the quality of their design and construction. They are ideally suited for family use at the cottage and for fitness training for the weekend warrior or the serious athlete. We invite you to contact us at 1-888-827-9904 to learn more and to order your boat today.
